Galley kitchens are common in Ottawa townhouses, 1970s splits, and downtown condos. Done well, they're the most efficient layout in residential design — every counter and appliance reachable in one step. Done poorly, they feel like a hallway with cabinets. This guide, developed with [Black Sable Group](https://blacksablegroup.com), shows what works and what to budget in 2026.
The galley kitchen is one of the most productive layouts in residential design. Professional kitchens are almost universally galleys.
In a properly designed galley, the cook is never more than two steps from any counter, sink, or cooktop. The walk distances during meal prep are 30–50% shorter than in U-shape or L-shape kitchens.
Galleys feel cramped when the aisle is too narrow (under 42"), when both ends are closed (creating a tunnel), and when upper cabinets feel too heavy on both walls. All three are design errors, not inherent to the layout.
The width of the working aisle between counters determines whether the kitchen feels generous or cramped.
42 inches between counter faces is the minimum for a single-cook galley. Below this, drawers and dishwashers can't open without blocking the aisle.
48–54 inches between counter faces is required when two cooks need to work simultaneously. Allows people to pass behind each other.
If your galley is under 84 inches wide overall, consider reducing one counter run to 18" depth (instead of standard 24"). The aisle gain is worth the storage loss.
Galley kitchen makeovers in Ottawa scale similarly to other small-kitchen projects.
Cabinet refacing or repaint, quartz counters, new backsplash, mid-range fixtures and appliances refresh. Layout unchanged.
Full new cabinetry (semi-custom), quartz counters, premium appliance package, lighting design, flooring update. Most common Ottawa townhouse galley scope.
Custom cabinetry, premium European or integrated appliances, marble or quartzite counters, designer lighting and millwork details. Common in Glebe, Sandy Hill, and Centretown row houses.
Five design moves that consistently transform Ottawa galleys.
Whenever possible, open one end of the galley to the dining room or family room. Creates sightlines that prevent the tunnel effect.
Replace upper cabinets on one wall with open shelving, a window, or a single feature element. Visually doubles the perceived width.
Long, narrow planks running the length of the galley elongate the room. Tile or square patterns shorten it.
Almost never — true islands need 84+ inch room widths beyond the galley counters. A peninsula at one end is the closest galley equivalent.
Sometimes. If the wall opens to dining or living space and is non-load-bearing, often yes. If load-bearing, the structural cost may not justify the layout change.
Counter-depth fridge (24" or 30"), 30" range, 24" dishwasher, integrated microwave drawer or OTR microwave. Avoid 36"+ appliances which break the proportions.
5–9 weeks of construction for mid-range, 8–14 weeks for premium with custom cabinetry. Add 4–8 weeks for design and selections.
Required for any plumbing, electrical, or wall changes. Cosmetic refresh without service moves typically doesn't need one.
